Past tense has four types.

•  in this tense we use 2nd form of the verb.

•  for negative sentence we use  ( did not)

and use Ist form of the verb. 

•  for interrogative sentence we use did at the start of the sentence and then use Ist form of the verb.

•   for negative interrogative sentence we use did at the start of the sentence and then not is  used after the subject.



Examples:

Formula:


( Subject + 2nd form of Verb + Object ) 


•  I went to school

•  They ate meal

•  he wrote a letter





     --2  {Past indefinite  ( negative )}


Formula:


( Subject + did not + 1st form of Verb + Object ) 


•  I did not go to school

•  They did not eat

•  he did not write a letter





  -3  {Past indefinite  ( interrogative  )}


Formula:


( did + Subject + 1st form of Verb + Object ) 


•  did i go to school?

•  did They eat ?

•  did he write a letter?





-4 {Past indefinite( negative interrogative  )}


Formula:


(Did+ Subject +not+ 1st form of Verb + Object ) 


•  did I not go to school?

•  (was , were) are used as a helping verb.

•  for negative sentence we use  ( not)

after the helping verb ( was , were)

•  for interrogative sentence we use

( was , were) at the start of the sentence.

•   for negative interrogative sentence we use (was , were )at the start of the sentence and then not is  used after the subject.

•   for negative interrogative sentence we use (had) at the start of the sentence and then (not been) is  used after the subject.

•  ( since , for ) are used before the object.

•  It had been raining for two hours.

•  They had been waiting since morning 

•  he had been living here since 1975.




-2{Past perfect continuous ( negative )}


Formula:


( Subject + had not been+ 1st form of Verb(ing) + since/for+Object ) 


•  It had not been raining since morning.

•  They had not been waiting for two hours.

•  he had not been living here for ten years.





-3 {Past perfect continuous ( interrogative )}


Formula:


( had + Subject + been+1st form of Verb(ing) +since/for+ Object ) 


•  had it been raining since morning ?

•  had they been waiting for two hours?

•  had he been living here for ten years? 





-4 {past perfect continuous ( negative interrogative  )}

(Had+ Subject +not been+ 1st form of Verb(ing) +since/for+ Object ) 


•  had it not been raining since morning ?
